Feeling My Age

Getting older has its drawbacks – but it's a lot better than the alternative.

Kozo in 1978

Kozo clowning with mates aged sixteen – wicked, funny and dropdead gorgeous with a hint of yearning in his eyes. Sharp and clever, he got a job placement in Tasmania in his twenties and returned to Japan fluent in English, with a hilariously broad Australian accent. No worries, mate.

In his thirties, after years of articled apprenticeship, he graduated as a patent lawyer and – wild and uproarious as ever – drove my wife and me around the streets of Tokyo in the dead of night at terrifying speed in his Porsche.

We last saw him a few years ago – shorthaired, sober suited about to get married. After this year’s earthquake diaster he send us a brief email to let us know he and his family were okay.

I do hope so…
