Feeling My Age

Getting older has its drawbacks – but it's a lot better than the alternative.

Goodbye Martin

November 5, 2011 Feeling My Age

Martin Ghillemyn was born on March 6th, 1960 in the small West Flanders town of Wevelgem – home, he once told me, to 31,084 citizens plus 47,864 dead German soldiers from the First World War. Not half of the living Wevelgem population is aware of that, he wryly observed.

In adult life Martin settled in the nearby village of Moorsele, where he bcame father to three children and founded a local charitable club known as De Behaarde Borsten (The Hairy Chests). He was also prone to severe depression and tragically took his own life on October 18th, 2010.

This is a memorial video made by his youngest son Tim and posted on YouTube on Martin’s birthday this year. The soundtrack is “If God Will Send His Angels” by U2.

Rest in peace, Martin.
