Feeling My Age

Getting older has its drawbacks – but it's a lot better than the alternative.

The A214 at Trinity Road underpass looking North towards Wandsworth Roundabout. This section of three lane highway was built in 1969 by the Greater London Council and lasts for less than a mile before reverting to a standard London street again.

What were they dreaming of ? It wasn’t even in the right place to be part of their infamous West Cross Route, of which only half a mile was ever built.  We now get traffic roaring down it at high speed only to get jammed up and congested as three lanes narrow down to two, and then just one, opposite Wandsworth Prison.

Where the gallows were kept in working order (and tested every six months) until as recently as 1993. The following year they were finally dismantled and  the condemned cell is supposedly now used as a tea room for  prison officers.  And while on the tangent of hanging, in once section of The Naked Lunch, William Burroughs riffed wildly on the subject of coming and going at the same time, as (he claimed) “a protest against the death penalty.”
