Visiting Kings Place Gallery in North London this weekend, my attention was immediately caught by this intense and handsome young man in the Ruth Borchard Selfportrait Competition and Exhibition. (Download catalogue here)
The painter – and subject – is Francis Martin, recently graduated from Southampton University and Winchester School Of Art. This canvas was one of 173 chosen for the exhibition (from 508 entries) and frankly, having seen the eventual £10k prize winner, I know which one I’d rather have hanging on my wall.

Though even if I could afford it, I’m not sure Wife would be best pleased…
